SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting--Program "Creating a Backyard Habitat" by Laura Fleming
DESCRIPTION:Laura Fleming\, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Oregon and “Wild Life Specialist\,” will discuss the necessary four elements for a well-rounded backyard habitat. \nFrom playing in the creek behind her house as a child in Cincinnati\, Ohio to obtaining a B.S. in Wildlife Biology and Management from Michigan State University\, Laura has always been interested in and connected to the natural world and its wildlife. She has developed habitat for wild birds in her yard with landscaping\, feeders\, houses\, baths and ponds which draw a great number and variety of birds. She considers herself a life-long student of birding\, finding there is always more to learn and discover. Her main focus is on conservation of the environment and the promotion of healthy habitats for birds and other wildlife.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting: Program: "A Trip Back in Time -- Historical Photograph Collection of the Kerbyville Museum of Josephine County" by Lee Webb
DESCRIPTION:In 2012\, Lee digitized the photographic archives of the Kerbyville Museum. The collection numbers over 2\,000 images–landscapes\, people\, and activities such as mining\, farming and logging–taken at locations all over Josephine County. Lee’s presentation features a sampling of these images\, with emphasis on landscapes\, many taken by photographers George Miessner and Burl Bogue\, who roamed our area in the early 1900s. The show finishes up with a visit to Oregon Caves\, a destination for many folks for well over 100 years. Bogue documented an arduous 1912 trip to Oregon Caves. \nLee Webb was the Forest Wildlife Biologist for the Rogue River Sisiyou National Forest from 1975 through 2003\, and is the current president of the Siskiyou Audubon Society. \nThe program will follow our chapter meeting.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting: Program: "Ducks of North America" by John Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Ducks are part of a diverse group of waterfowl which also includes swans and geese. Ducks are widespread across America and account for 62 species. All these birds are associated with aquatic habitats. They all have a seasonal molt where they “blow” all their worn out feathers and may become flightless. The process of growing new feathers takes a few weeks\, when the birds are again ready to take wing. This program will cover a variety of ducks of North America. \nCome join us for refreshments and “bird talk” at 6:00pm. The program will immediately follow a brief chapter meeting. Great door prizes are to be won! Past door prizes have included\, books\, bird feeders and bird seed. \nWood Duck image by Tom Hamilton

DESCRIPTION:The meeting will begin with bird talk\, socializing and a free door prize will be raffled! Past door prizes have included bird related books\, bird seed\, bird houses and bird feeders. Society business and announcements will precede the main program. \nIn the early 2000’s\, a group of local folks headed by Eleanor Pugh worked together to restore the Coyote Creek Wetlands\, near Wolf Creek\, Oregon. Through images and words\, Susan Bush\, Fran Taylor\, and Lee Webb will bring you up to date! \nRefreshments will be served–quite possibly homemade goodies!

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting - Program: "Great Gray Owls - What They Are & How to Find Them" by Harry Fuller
DESCRIPTION:Great Gray Owls are one of the most mysterious and sought-after bird residents of California\, Oregon and Washington. It is the tallest owl in North America\, and notoriously approachable by humans\, but finding it intentionally isn’t easy due to its nocturnal habits\, excellent camouflage and silent flight. \nHarry Fuller is the author of four natural history books. Besides his illustrated book on Great Gray Owls\, he has authored Freeway Birding\, San Francisco to Seattle\, and San Francisco’s Natural History — Sand Dune to Streetcars. His most recent book is Birding Harney County. SUMMARY:Siskiyou Audubon Field Trip to Golden - Coyote Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Join Siskiyou Audubon Society leaders in a visit to the Golden-Coyote Wetlands! We will meet at 10:00 am at the ghost town of Golden and walk down the trail into the wetlands below. Along the way\, we will look for birds and other wildlife as we assess the habitat. \nTwenty-some years ago\, SAS joined with Lichen Cooperative and other Wolf Creek friends to reclaim wetlands destroyed by 1880s gold miners. A native creek was recovered and native plants restored. Interest in the area has waned in recent years\, however\, the wetlands belong to the State of Oregon Parks. Its Ranger also oversees the Wolf Creek Inn\, on the west side of highway I-5. For more information about Golden visit the State of Oregon Parks. \nDirections: Take I-5 north to Wolf Creek exit 76. At the bottom of the off-ramp\, turn RIGHT and drive 3.6 miles up Coyote Creek Road to the ghost town of Golden.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting - Program: "Hummingbirds of Belize and Costa Rica" by John Taylor
DESCRIPTION:There are over 240 living species of hummingbirds\, and new ones are still being discovered. Hummingbirds can be found in the western hemisphere only\, from southern Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego and from below sea level deserts to steamy tropical forests up to 16\,000 feet in the Andes of South America. \nJohn and Joy Taylor visited Belize and Costa rica many years ago and expert guide Manuel Rodriguez was with them the whole time. Each evening\, they would go to the hotel lobby and carefully go over their notes. The hummingbirds you will see tonight are only the that Joy and John saw and were confirmed by their guide.
